Paradoxical Life of The Borderline Client; I Hate You, Don’t Leave Me. Theory and Practice

With John Monk-Steel CTA(P), TSTA (P), UKCP Reg

On Saturday 24th September 2016

Working with people who have a Borderline personality condition can present practitioners with some of their greatest therapeutic challenges. Confused and uncertain, these clients present in therapy with life stories that are perplexing, paradoxical, inconsistent and contradictory. One week you are the most wonderful person in the world, the next you are the worst. It is not uncommon for practitioners to find themselves considering practicing outside of their normal therapeutic boundaries. Even experienced practitioners may find themselves entangled in the drama of their borderline client’s world as projection, projective identification and other complex unconscious processes are acted out and worked through in the therapy room.

During this skills based workshop John Monk-Steel will walk participants through an exploration of the intrapsychic and inter-relational processes of individuals with a Borderline Personality and help practitioners to identify and understand this complex character style. John will also provide guidance to some of the psychotherapeutic strategies available for working with people who are suffering with a Borderline condition, and discuss how practitioners may implement such strategies to effectively facilitate change in talking based psychotherapies.
